The dedication and commitment of our industry to sustainability and environmental responsibility has led to some good news. The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has announced that emissions reductions achieved by its member mining facilities in Scope 1 emissions reached an impressive 9.3 percent during the 2022 financial year.

Scope 1 emissions, which encompass direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by a reporting company, demonstrated a substantial decline. Moreover, Scope 2 emissions, associated with purchased energy, also saw a noteworthy reduction of over seven percent in FY22 within the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting scheme (NGERs).

Tania Constable, CEO of MCA, emphasised the magnitude of this achievement, highlighting that emissions reported through the safeguard mechanism and NGERs continued to decrease, in line with the industry’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

It’s crucial to recognise that these outstanding accomplishments have been made while supporting Australian jobs and contributing significantly to state and federal government revenues. The industry has laid a strong foundation for future progress in climate action initiatives and is committed to providing regular updates on its journey.

This remarkable success underscores the construction and mining equipment industry’s dedication to sustainable practices, emissions reduction, and responsible resource extraction. It demonstrates our industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its vital role in Australia’s journey toward a more environmentally conscious future.

As members of CMEIG, we should take pride in these achievements and continue to explore ways to contribute to these positive changes in our industry. Let us draw inspiration from this progress and continue to strive for excellence in our sustainability efforts.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication to the industry and its sustainability goals.
