As we move into the final quarter of 2025, I’d like to reflect on the evolving landscape of Australia’s construction and mining equipment sectors.
Australia’s economy has shown signs of resilience, with GDP rebounding 0.6% in the June quarter. Household spending rose 5.1% in the 12 months to July 2025, however, broader economic momentum remains subdued, with private sector activity still lagging and public sector demand declining for the first time since 2018.
Despite inflation easing to 2.1%, continued adverse weather and overall subdued government spending have contributed to cautious confidence in the construction earthmoving space. As we enter the warmer months, when activity typically lifts, we expect to see demand for equipment begin to rise.
Mining equipment demand has grown in 2025, up just over 10% YTD, reflecting cautious optimism amid broader economic softness. Looking ahead, stable commodity prices and continued investment in resource-rich states such as WA and QLD suggest steady performance.
Construction equipment demand remains mixed. As of August YTD, combined construction equipment sales are down 4% compared to the same period in 2024, with excavator sales down 1%. However, there’s significant disparity across the states:
- QLD, WA and SA have seen growth of 11%, 5% and 12% respectively.
- Meanwhile, VIC and NSW are down 13% and 4% respectively, with other states and territories also showing declines.
CMEIG’s working groups have again had a busy few months. The Engineering Working Group (EWG) is advancing key initiatives around electrification and safety standards, as detailed later in this newsletter.
As our industry continues its shift toward electric, automated and zero-emission machinery, with over 1,000 electric machines expected in mining operations by 2030, our Education and Training Group (ETG), in collaboration with the EWG and key OEMs, is working closely with stakeholders to ensure we futureproof our equipment service and maintenance workforce through upskilling of heavy-duty diesel plant technicians.
Finally, we’re looking forward to welcoming members to the Brisbane Member Forum on October 15 – I hope to see many of you there. We are also planning a Melbourne Member Forum, with further details to follow soon.
Best regards,
