Whilst the weekend’s election results signal a major change in the Australian political landscape, it is pleasing that investment in infrastructure is planned to continue under a Labor Government.

A standout consideration in this election was the emergence of the “teal” candidates that promoted the demands for more to be done on our environment and specifically climate change.

We are all aware that what we do as organisations can impact our environment. In this May Newsletter we are pleased to present a Sustainability template that should assist member businesses in their own initiatives to reduce waste and improve their operations whilst delivering to their bottom line. Separately CMEIG is also developing a Toward Zero blueprint that I look forward to sharing with you.

In line with planning for a sustainable future, the audit of skills training packages highlights the present and future skills needs to deal with emerging low emission technologies.

In other news I note the excellent work that the HSE Group is doing in collating aggregated injury and medical treatment statistics as a guide to inform improvement initiatives. Objective data is central to improved HSE outcomes as `you can’t improve what you can’t measure’.

CMEIG’s Engineering Working Group have undertaken extensive work on earthmoving machines lifting as a secondary function so the comments included are pertinent to recent licensing requirements.

Further to this, we recognise the accolades to Os Ali, recently announced as a Standards Hero. Os chairs the ME 63 Australian Standards Committee on Earthmoving Equipment. It is well deserved and a credit both to Os and all the CMEIG participants working on the regulations that affect our industry.

Finally cyber security threats are something that potentially affect all of our businesses. The war in Ukraine has evidenced capabilities that until recently were considered more the domain of the Hunger Games or other fiction.

CMEIG will be providing a webinar with the Australian Cyber Security Centre on Cybersecurity What your business needs to know. I look forward to providing details in the near term.

Stay safe and I trust you enjoy this Newsletter.

Best Regards,

Dean Gaedtke
Chair CMEIG
