CMEIG’s Engineering Working Group (EWG) has had another productive quarter, progressing a wide range of technical priorities impacting the construction and mining equipment industry.
The group held its most recent quarterly meeting on 25 November 2025 via Teams, with discussions focusing on several key areas, including:
- Assessing the need for a new Australian Standard to address vehicle support stands
- Reviewing recently published standards, including AS 5368 and the AS 20474 Series
Several sub-working groups also provided updates on ongoing initiatives relating to:
- Quick couplers
- Electrification and workforce upskilling
- Regulatory developments, including SafeWork guidance on ground conditions and moving plant
- Lifting freely suspended loads with excavators
- Glass testing practices
New topics raised for exploration included:
- Man-baskets on wheeled loaders: Members highlighted a lack of harmonisation in elevated work platform requirements for equipment used in underground mining
- A proposed technical paper on cabin glass labelling
- A proposed technical paper explaining machine mass definitions
- Consideration of the QLD RSHQ position on operating machinery in mines during lightning storms
- Updates to CMEIG industry statistics, including classification guidance for electric equipment
With more than 30 technical experts participating, the EWG continues to deliver strong industry representation and guidance. The group remains focused on:
- Representing industry interests across Australian Standards committees
- Liaising with regulators nationwide to ensure alignment between standards, regulation and industry practice
- Advising on technical issues affecting the safe operation of construction and mining equipment
- Supporting the harmonisation of standards and regulations across jurisdictions
The EWG’s work remains central to shaping safe, consistent and forward-looking technical practices within Australia’s construction and mining equipment sector.
