It’s been a productive 2025 for the CMEIG Engineering Working Group (EWG), with major focus areas including Electrification & Electrical Safety and Lifting with Excavators.

To support the continuing shift toward electrification, the EWG is actively collaborating with international stakeholders on the development and revision of more than 25 Australian and international standards. Key topics include DC arc-flash safety, battery and charger requirements, performance measurement for electrified machinery, and training and licensing for servicing.

On the issue of lifting with excavators, the group continues to work closely with state regulators to influence the creation of consistent, practical guidelines. At present, there are significant discrepancies between jurisdictions. For example, one state requires a high-risk licence for loads over 3 tonnes, while another proposes no licence but mandates rated capacity limiters for variable load lifting. The EWG is also progressing publications on Pressure Vessel Registration in WA and seat weight ratings for earthmoving machinery.

The EWG maintains its strong advocacy role in Australian Standards development, including:

  • Finalising the withdrawal of nearly 60 AS and AS/NZS standards no longer in use.
  • Maintaining uniquely Australian standards where necessary.
  • Supporting the harmonisation of over 155 standards with international best practice.

A significant recent milestone is the development of the AS 20474 Earthmoving Machinery – Safety Series, which covers both general and machinery-specific safety requirements. Following the close of the public comment period in March, the ME-063 committee is reviewing feedback, with final publication expected by September 2025.

We’re proud of the EWG’s ongoing work in supporting the industry through practical guidance and world-class standards development.
