CMEIG has undertaken a review of the AUR 31220 Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology and its currency against the future skills required by the construction and mining equipment industry.

The emergence of new power technologies and the demands of a low carbon/emission environment has raised the question of which skills are relevant today, what is needed in the future, and how these training competencies will be funded.

Our key findings were:

  • The current qualification is no longer up to date with industry needs
  • Emerging power technologies require higher voltage auto electrical skills to be included in the qualification
  • Adopting new Units of Competency to address emerging requirements will necessitate an urgent review to rationalise or remove dated units of competency, unless addressed by a substantive increase in Registered Training Organisation (RTO) funding per apprentice
