A message from the CEO

Welcome to the first CMEIG Newsletter of 2025.

The external landscape remains highly dynamic, with the Federal Labor Government hoping the recent RBA interest rate cut will ease cost-of-living pressures ahead of the upcoming Federal Election. Meanwhile, terms like trade war and tariffs have become part of daily vernacular, with potential ripple effects that could drive up global interest rates.

For the construction and mining equipment industry, 2024 saw sales retreat across all product categories after the record highs of recent years.

As we move forward in 2025, electrification and alternative power solutions will remain a core focus for CMEIG’s Education and Engineering working groups.

In regulatory developments, AS20474, the overarching Earthmoving Machinery Standard, is now in its final stages. The draft standard is open for public comment with Standards Australia until March 7, and we strongly encourage members to review and provide feedback.

In this edition, we’re pleased to announce a CMEIG Member Forum on Thursday, March 20, at the Stamford Plaza Sydney Airport, following the CMEIG AGM. More details are included below.

Additionally, a key group of CMEIG OEM members recently met with AUSMASA, the Job Skills Council responsible for construction and mining equipment training, to discuss necessary updates to Mobile Plant qualifications that will help address the industry’s evolving skills needs.

On a personal note, this will be my final newsletter as CEO of CMEIG. It has been a privilege to serve this industry, and I sincerely thank each of you for your support throughout my tenure. CMEIG has grown into a stronger, more coordinated national industry group, making a meaningful impact on key issues that shape our sector.

I am also delighted to introduce Frank Gili as the new Chief Executive Officer of CMEIG. Many of you may already know Frank, and I have no doubt that he will continue to drive CMEIG forward. Please join me in welcoming him to the role.

Best regards and signing off
David Birrell
